Year in Recap

First, a big thanks to you all for subscribing and being members here on Data Punk Hockey. This was our first full season with Data Punk Hockey, and it's mind-blowing how fast the season came and went! And the playoffs, what? So close for Edmonton (we were rooting for you 'Berta). Not to mention, the Draft 24 has had some interesting ups and downs. (You can check out the First Round recap here.) All in all, another great hockey season!

For us, this year was about learning and finding our legs. We love hockey, have a lot of experience in analytics, AI and content production, but weren't quite sure how this would translate into regular hockey analytics content to support and grow a global community of enthusiasts. But, we were able to publish quite a bit of content as a foundation and begin to understand what worked and where we need to improve.

As a recap, here are a few things we accomplished:

  • Created introductory content for sports analytics enthusiasts who are interested in learning about hockey.
  • Published level 100, 200 and 300 content on various hockey analytics topics.
  • Published tutorials and resources for you to use for your own projects – e.g., datasets, R code, and Power BI dashboards.
  • Created an introductory course on Hockey Analytics and Power BI.
  • Posted regular quick-hit videos on YouTube to complement our newsletters.
  • Published a multi-week series on preparing for the NHL 2024 draft.

We're now evaluating what worked and areas for improvement.

Our Focus this Summer

In the spirit of continuing to grow the DPH community and to improve our content and offerings, there are a few areas that we'll be focusing on this summer. They are as follows:

  • Improve our data pipelines and architecture. Yeah, sounds boring, right? But, we need a robust pipeline that refreshes every morning so we can give you the latest analytics.
  • Focus on advanced, AI/machine-learning content. We wanted to get a foundation of content done before layering in more advanced topics, so this summer you'll see more advanced topics on Data Punk Hockey.
  • Improve the content experience. We don't want to pile more content on top of itself; we want to create a great content and learning experience. So, we'll be spending time this summer thinking through how we can improve on the current experience.
  • Engage in more data storytelling. This is a passion area for us, and we continue to see the need across journalists (sports, investigative, etc.) and content creators for building advanced analytics into storytelling. We will have content here in Data Punk Hockey specific to sports and hockey and we are building out a separate content experience that is wholly dedicated to just data storytelling as well. (More on that coming soon!)

The above will keep us busy, and we believe it will lead to a better content and learning experience for you.

That said, we always welcome your thoughts and feedback. If you have ideas or comments you want to share, email us at your convenience.

Thanks!

Data Punk Hockey Team
