The New Season: What's in Store?

A short update on what's in store for the upcoming hockey season!
The New Season: What's in Store?

Hey Data Punks!

The pre-season is underway and believe it or not, armchair analysts are already predicting who'll take the Cup. SaberTooth13579 seems pretty confident on this one:

For us here at DPH, we're going to wait at least until opening night to start our prognostications. 🙂

In the meantime, below you will find a view of our initial plans for the upcoming hockey season.

New Series: Vintage Hockey

We're going to open the 2024-2025 season with a six-part vintage look-back on how hockey and hockey analytics has evolved. We've been curating and exploring team and player data from 1917 to 2024 to research the series and damn it's been a trip. We'll cover several topics from the evolution of analytics, key player comparisons (then to now), how team and player performance has changed throughout the years, and more.

💡
The idea for this series came to us at the suggestion of a DPH community member, so if there's something you want to see be sure to drop us a line. Our goal for DPH is to align the content to your needs.

Premium Content

This year, we're going to continue our regular newsletter and content publishing but we'll also be adding premium content. The premium content will focus on curated and cleaned data (refreshed daily), reports, and practice projects. The goal for this premium content is to help you with your learning, personal growth, content, and so on.

We're going to seed the premium content from our own research and experience, but if there is data you need for your own projects, business or creative content, let us know.

We're targeting mid October to roll out this new part of the site, so keep an eye out for those changes!

New Content Experience: Data Storytelling

While many of you only see the hockey side of our focus, the Data Punk team also has a ton of experience in data, AI and design. So, this summer we began to focus on data storytelling. By expanding our footprint here, we'll publish more content and resources that address how to leverage and integrate data, AI and design to create and publish stories through articles, infographics, socials and video.

We've stood up an initial web presence at datapunk.media, where we've published some general data storytelling content, courseware and resources. And we just completed a private minimal viable product (MVP) for content creators who engage in data storytelling. (The MVP was focused on using analytics to create sports-centric data stories.) We'll soon be releasing more content (which will focus on sports and data storytelling) and offering workshops and hackathons.

Marketing

To date, we've not really done any marketing. This was because we wanted to understand what Data Punk was; give it a chance to come to life, so to speak, before taking it out to the world. Thus, doing a full-scale marketing effort seemed premature.

That said, with the content we've built in Data Punk Hockey and Data Punk Media and the MVP work we did this summer, our passions and mission are now more clear. We're also getting better organized as a small start-up and global team. So, it's time to start up the marketing engine.

Our high-level goals for this year are as follows:

  1. Grow our global community through content and resources that map to their needs.
  2. Expand our offerings to include more content and resources that integrate data, AI and design.
  3. Democratize analytics (especially in sports) for content creators.

You'll see some of our marketing efforts light up later in the year, but in the meantime check out the new Data Punk Media site, sign up as a free member and please share with your friends, family and colleagues!

We Want Your Feedback!

Lastly, be sure to reach out to us if you're interested in specific topics for us to cover, data to be curated or courseware to create. We believe the Data Punk experience is much more valuable if what we build caters to your needs and helps you personally scale and grow.

You can drop us an email (steve@datapunkmedia.com) with any requests, thoughts or general comments?

Now let's get this damned season under way!
